The ocean covers more than 70 percent of our planet’s surface, yet we have explored less than 20 percent of it. Marine biodiversity is not just fascinating — it is foundational to life on Earth.

What Is Marine Biodiversity?

Marine biodiversity refers to the variety of life found in the ocean, encompassing every species from bacteria and algae to fish, marine mammals, and invertebrates. Scientists estimate there are over 250,000 known marine species, with potentially millions more yet to be discovered. This diversity exists across a vast range of ecosystems including coral reefs, kelp forests, deep-sea trenches, polar seas, and open ocean gyres.

Why Biodiversity Matters

Healthy marine ecosystems provide services that underpin human civilisation. Oceans regulate climate, absorb carbon dioxide, supply protein to over three billion people globally, and generate economic activity worth trillions of dollars annually. When biodiversity declines, these systems become fragile and their ability to deliver these services is compromised. Research consistently shows that species-rich ecosystems are more resilient to disturbance and more productive over time.

Coral Reefs: The Rainforests of the Sea

Coral reefs occupy less than 1 percent of the ocean floor yet support an estimated 25 percent of all marine species. They serve as nurseries for fish, protect coastlines from wave energy, and support tourism and fisheries industries worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Deep-Sea Ecosystems

The deep ocean — below 200 metres — represents the largest habitat on Earth. Despite being cold, dark, and under extreme pressure, it teems with life adapted to these conditions. Hydrothermal vents host chemosynthetic communities that thrive without sunlight. Cold-water coral reefs provide structure and shelter in the abyss. Our understanding of these ecosystems is only just beginning to emerge, and the species living there may hold answers to questions about the origins of life itself.

The Role of Biosubstrates in Supporting Biodiversity

Biological substrates — surfaces that support the growth of organisms — play a critical role in marine ecosystems. They provide attachment points for sessile organisms, feeding grounds for grazers, and nursery habitat for juvenile fish and invertebrates. Engineered biosubstrates are increasingly being deployed to supplement natural habitat in areas where anthropogenic disturbance has reduced available surface complexity.

Monitoring and Protecting What We Have

Protecting marine biodiversity requires robust monitoring programs and strong governance frameworks. Technologies including environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling, autonomous underwater vehicles, and satellite tracking are transforming our ability to understand ocean life at scale.
